The large North Yorkshire village of Terrington lies in the Ryedale district of the county, some 4 miles west of the racing town of Malton. It has a rich history, being mentioned in the Domesday Book when known as Teurintone. Although it is clear that race meetings were staged prior to 1864, the only record of results from Terrington races was from the meeting held on Monday 4th April 1864. Unfortunately attendance at the meeting suffered owing to a clash with the nearby York Steeplechase meeting. However, the Howard Stakes, over a mile and a half, was won by Mr Cooper’s brown gelding Little Fred, winning both heats from Maid of Thirsk and Easthorpe Lass. The Rifle Stakes, over 1 ¼ miles, followed and saw Mr Rudson’s Polly awarded the race when Miss Dora, who won both heats with ease, was disqualified because she was not owned by a rifleman. Two minor races concluded the programme; the Park Stakes was won by Rose, owned by Mr Wood, beating Ratcliffe Lass, Nancy and Butcher Lass, while the Innkeeper’s Plate saw Polly beat Stittenham and Butcher Lass. |
